Wiki Bibliography

Michael Whale (b. 13 May 1951, London, England) better known as James Whale is a British radio and television broadcaster. He has presented late night phone in programmes on UK radio for several decades, starting on Metro Radio in Newcastle where he was the original presenter of the Nightowls Late Evening Phone-In show from the station's launch date in 1974. He later moved to Radio Aire in Leeds (which was also simulcast with Red Rose Radio from Preston - both being part of the same group, Transworld, owned by Owen Oyston), and at one time his radio programme was televised simultaneously as "The James Whale Radio Show" on late night ITV. Whale has hosted a regular phone-in show on talkSPORT from Sunday to Thursday since 1995.

He has been married to Melinda Whale since 1970, and has 2 children, James and Peter.

Whale has won three Sony Radio Awards. He has also written a book "Bald on Top", inspired by his own premature hair loss.

On the 21st of December 2006 he presented The Mike Dickin Tribute Show, a friend of his who died in a car crash on 18th of December 2006.

Biography

You know you are in the presence of someone special when you look at the number of people James Whale has managed to offend over the years. Whether you’re pushing 80 or still collecting My Little Pony, if you annoy Whale, he’ll soon let you know about it. The outspoken and self-righteous late night king has developed a cult following over the years with his confrontational style that would have Attila the Hun running for the hills. James loves nothing more than verbally assaulting callers on his late night phone-ins and it seems people on the other end of the line can’t get enough as we’ve gone through eight switchboards in the last two years. The late night mouth-of-the-south started his career at Metro Radio in Newcastle, before going on to cause many a producer loss of sleep at Radio Tees and Radio Aire Leeds. He also made his first break into television with The James Whale Debate in which voices were never raised and toys never thrown from prams as he chaired live studio discussions on religious and moral issues. In 1993 he moved back to his native London to present Whale On for London Weekend Television, and 1995 saw the launch of The James Whale Show, which became cult late night viewing for millions. James has won three Sony Radio Awards. He has also written a book "Bald on Top" inspired by his own premature hair loss. Realising he may possibly be losing the chance to step on more toes because of people being fast asleep during his late night slot, James also has his own column on talkSPORT in which he vents more spleen.

Q&A

James Whale has recently said that he did not answer this question and that is was made up.

I know you’re an archery enthusiast. Who out of the talkSPORT presenters would you most like to take aim at while they were tied up with an apple on their head?

The Moose, his head is a big enough target that I’m bound to hit it.

What is your biggest pet hate?

Being asked this question.

Play nicely James. How do you get on the right side of James Whale?

With great difficulty. Only a few have ever succeeded.

Say you went into politics and made it all the way to 10 Downing Street, would we live under a Pol Pot regime or something closer to Gandhi?

We would live under a benevolent dictatorship and be gloriously happy to do so.

Would Tony Blair be invited to your inauguration?

Tony would be the guest of honour. There are more than a few things I’d like to say to him.

Who from the talkSPORT team would make it on to your backbench?

Every backbench needs an Ash. Mike Parry, Alan Brazil and Mike Dickin would also have roles but I’m not sure what positions I’d punish them with yet.

Get Brazil to clean the toilets he’d be good at that. Has there been an incident when your mouth has landed you serious trouble? Something that resulted in fisticuffs?

Impending legal cases?

I said no comment.

Do you ever leave surprises in the studio for Mike Mendoza?

Yes, all the time. I’m not giving you any examples though. If you want to know then you’ll have to listen, won’t you?

Who is cooler out of Gilo and Keith Arthur?

Stop wasting my time with rubbish questions.

Have you always been a nocturnal creature? Do you enjoy sleeping in too much to get a day job?

Late night shows are much better. I’m not saying you can get away with more because you can’t, if anything you’re more scrutinized. But you’d be surprised how much of an audience deprive themselves of sleep just to air their views late at night.

Do you ever ring any of the other talkSPORT presenters in the middle of the night to annoy them?

Ian Collins has changed his number several times. Something about not being interested in my rants at 3 o’clock in the morning.
